The pace of the game ground to a halt as both teams paraded to the free throw line. Arenas's early aggressiveness paid off when Mourning picked up his fourth foul early in the quarter. Doleac picked up his fourth while trying to slide in front of Arenas, who made a layup and converted the free throw with 5:53 left. On the other end, Wade continued his assault on the Wizards' defense by repeatedly putting his head down and slashing into the lane. Wade made a few spectacular layups, short runners and mid-range jump shots. The man nicknamed "Flash" finished the quarter with 38 total points, and there wasn't a person in the building who believed that he'd finish the game with less than 50. Aside from their inability to stop Wade, the Wizards were outrebounded 12-3 in the quarter even though Mourning hardly played.
