The Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council recommends a system of layered security to protect vehicles from being stolen:
· Always lock your vehicle and take the keys. Never hide spare keys in or under the vehicle. Statistics show more than 25 percent of vehicles stolen have the keys left in them.
· Always park in well-lighted areas and be familiar with the surroundings.
· Never leave the registration or insurance cards in the vehicle. Thieves will be able to provide legitimate documents if stopped by the police.
· Keep valuables and packages out of sight.
· Use anti-theft devices, such as a steering wheel lock, electronic alarm, ignition kill-switch, gas cap lock, vehicle identification number etching on windows or a tracking device.
· Register your vehicle in a Watch Your Car program. The program allows police to stop your vehicle if it is on the road between 1 and 5 a.m., when most auto thefts occur.
