Dear Dr. Gridlock:

Some years ago I got a Smart Tag to travel on the Dulles Toll Road. Later I got an E-ZPass to travel to New York. Now they are compatible.

Do you have any thoughts on which I should discontinue? I've heard rumors that the Smart Tag may start charging an annual fee. Do you have any information about that?

You don't need both accounts any more. It doesn't matter which one you close, according to Ryan Hall, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT does not charge the $1-a-month administrative fee of some states in the E-ZPass network, but may do so next year, Hall said. The charge would be levied whether you have a Smart Tag or E-ZPass account, he said.
