Senior center fielder Brittany Lansdowne's one-out line drive to center scored junior right fielder Jamie Jansen from second base in the bottom of the 14th inning, lifting top-ranked Osbourn over visiting Stonewall Jackson, 1-0, yesterday in the Virginia AAA Cedar Run District softball championship.
The Raiders' catcher was charged with an error for mishandling the throw to home plate, Osbourn Coach Renee Leake said.
"The center fielder made a great throw," Leake said. "It was a close play at the plate, we had to take a chance."
Osbourn All-Met pitcher Cristi Ecks went the distance, giving up two hits and striking out 18 for Osbourn (22-0). Stonewall Jackson senior pitcher Kirby Jenkins struck out eight and allowed six hits.
Stonewall Jackson will travel to Culpeper on Monday for a noon Northwestern Region final; Osbourn will host Albemarle at 6 p.m. Monday in the quarterfinals.
Brown Goes the Distance
Senior All-Met Kharya Brown won the 100 and 200 meters, finished second in the long jump and placed third in the 400 to lead Brooke Point to the girls' team title at yesterday's Virginia AAA Northwestern Region track and field championships in Charlottesville. Lynchburg school E.C. Glass defended its boys' title.
Back for Seconds
Langley sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring all of its runs in a 7-1 victory over No. 6 Westfield in a Virginia AAA Northern Region baseball first-round game in McLean.
Senior Kyle Fraser led off the second with a home run, and junior Alex Dadisman hit a three-run homer later in the inning for Langley (19-4). Senior All-Met pitcher Jimmy Saris held All-Met Player of the Year Brandon Snyder hitless in four at-bats, with one strikeout. . . .
North Point, a new school set to open in August in Charles County, has named Patrick Hoiler its football coach. Hoiler, 26, spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Thomas Stone following one season as a Northern assistant.
