D.C. United has granted Eliseo Quintanilla's request to be released, ending the young Salvadoran's once-promising career in Washington.

"It's sad," the forward-midfielder said last night after United's 2-0 loss to FC Dallas. "I feel I need to play and I'm not getting the opportunity. I want to go somewhere so I can play."

Quintanilla, 22, started 21 games and scored five goals over his first two years, but missed all of 2004 after breaking his leg in the preseason. With an abundance of attacking players, Quintanilla was never able to crack the lineup this season and was relegated to reserve games.

United officials said they were unable to trade Quintanilla this past week and were left with no option but to waive him. If another MLS team claims him, United would be compensated. Quintanilla might also end up back in the Salvadoran league, where he started his career.

Dallas's Local Flavor

Dallas made its only visit of the season to RFK Stadium last night, but for several of its players, Washington is a familiar location.

Defender Clarence Goodson and forward Abe Thompson were teammates at W.T. Woodson High School and the University of Maryland. Goodson left College Park a year early and was drafted by Dallas in the first round of the 2004 MLS draft. Thompson remained at Maryland for four years and went to Dallas in the supplemental draft this past winter.

Goodson has started every league match in central defense and Thompson made his debut last night. Another former Terrapin, defender Phil Salyer, has made two appearances after starting 16 games last season. . . .

United rookie midfielder Clyde Simms wasn't available in order to be with the U.S. national team in Chicago for the 2-1 exhibition loss to England. Simms, 22, made his international debut, entering during injury time for Clint Dempsey. He is expected to remain with the U.S. team for its upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
