Md. History Seminars
Teachers are being asked to apply to two one-week seminars on the state's historical contributions to democracy, which will be given this summer by the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
In addition to teachers in kindergarten through 12th grade, administrators, substitute teachers, other classroom professionals and librarians may apply. Those selected will receive $500 stipends.
The first workshop is June 19-24; the second is June 26-July 1.
The programs are part of the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History Workshops, which provide K-12 educators with the opportunity to study American history and visit relevant historical sites.
The featured sites in "Life, Liberty and Opportunity: The Struggle for Freedom in Tidewater Maryland 1634-1865," include Historic St. Mary's City, Sotterley Plantation and Point Lookout. The Center for the Study of Democracy was awarded a $148,000 grant by the NEH to bring educators from across the country to study Maryland's history.
"Maryland has made significant contributions to the foundation of democracy," Zach P. Messitte, the director of the Center for the Study of Democracy and an assistant professor of political science at St. Mary's College, said in a statement seeking applicants. "Many Marylanders are surprised when they learn about our state's rich heritage."
Teachers in public, private, parochial and charter schools as well as home-schooling parents may apply. For more information about how to apply, visit: http://www.smcm.edu/democracy/offerings/landmarks.htm or contact Messitte at 240-895-4215.

Anti-Cancer Program
The St. Mary's County Health Department, which receives money from the state Cigarette Restitution Fund for Tobacco Use Prevention and Colorectal Cancer prevention, is seeking applications from community, volunteer or religion-based groups, organizations and agencies to assist in community education during fiscal 2006.
Tobacco use prevention activities must include community education initiatives on the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke. Activities must also promote the recruitment of participants for the Health Department's smoking cessation programs. Targeted populations for the fiscal year beginning July 1 are pregnant women; high school and middle school youths, particularly girls and minorities; and smokers living in homes with minor children.
