Get to the Bowie Baysox baseball game early on June 9 and a not-so-minor-league freebie awaits: a health screening for men over the age of 18.
The noninvasive screening, which will involve checks for weight, blood pressure and diabetes, is part of "Check Up or Check Out," a men's health campaign sponsored by Spike TV. Clinicians from Southern Maryland Hospital will also screen participants for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) -- a ballooning of the body's major artery that kills more than 15,000 people each year -- by taking an ultrasound of the abdomen.
The screening will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Thursday evening game (Baysox vs. Harrisburg Senators) near the main entrance of the stadium, at 4101 NE Crain Highway in Bowie. Screenings should take about 10 minutes in full, according to Kim Breedlove, the hospital's community health clinician. The first 200 participants will receive a free T-shirt.
"We're making it easy" for men to get checked, said the campaign's executive producer, Amanda Reyes.
