Party: Democrat

Age: 53

Residence: Richmond.

Education: BA, College of William and Mary; JD, University of Iowa; Fulbright scholar.

Occupation: Consultant.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, Virginia House of Delegates, 1997-2005; Richmond City Council, 1992-97.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction?

"I grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Richmond, living in a house built by my mother and father, going to segregated schools.

My parents believed that education was the ticket to a better life, so they pushed my sisters and brother and me to excel in school. I got the education my parents wanted for me only because I earned scholarships to pay for it, including the chance to study abroad as a Fulbright fellow. I know firsthand the importance of education to opportunity, and what it means to need financial aid to get the education you deserve."

Why should voters elect you?

"Virginians are looking for candidates who are authentic -- candidates who do not try to be all things to all people. I am that candidate."
