Cinderella Story I

Scarlett O'Hara would be proud. When Connie Brennan , a fundraiser for Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.), received an invitation to tonight's President's Dinner at the Washington Convention Center, she scoured stores to find the perfect fabric for the perfect dress. The Savannah, Ga., native's search was fruitless.

Brennan tells The Post she was at home wondering what to wear to the Republican fundraising event when inspiration struck: "I looked at the draperies in front of me and thought, 'No, that's just too weird.' " But the material was exactly what she was looking for. "I called my dressmaker and said, 'I just had a "Gone With the Wind" moment -- can you make this work?' " she recalls. Brennan's dressmaker, college design student Anthony Canney of Savannah, was up for the challenge.

Brennan seems pleased with the final result, but says her windows are a little bare.

Cinderella Story II

And porn star Mary Carey , who's also going to the President's Dinner, knows exactly what she's wearing and she wants to show it off to stop all the wagging tongues. Carey (real name Mary Cook) will hold a news conference and fashion show today at the Coyote Ugly Saloon in Chinatown to reveal what she will wear "so I can show the rest of the public criticizing me that I will be dressing appropriately."

Carey, 24, says she has been chastised for her decision to attend tonight's event with her boss, hard-core porn producer and National Republican Congressional Committee member Mark Kulkis . "People think it's wrong, [but] I can conduct myself as a lady," she says.

The actress also intends to officially announce her candidacy for the 2006 California gubernatorial race. Her platform includes the legalization of gay marriage, "standing up for freedom of speech" and higher taxes on plastic surgery.

As for her dress, Carey says the public will be pleasantly surprised: "It's conservative, or at least conservative for me."

Destiny Dissolving

A future together just wasn't in the stars for Destiny's Child . The multi-platinum trio told MTV News they will part ways when their world tour ends in the fall.

"After a lot of discussion and some deep soul-searching, we realized that our current tour has given us the opportunity to leave Destiny's Child on a high note," the group's statement said.

The R&B group -- Beyonce Knowles , Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams -- formed in 1990 and has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. It had a two-year hiatus so each member could pursue a solo career, then reunited last year.

Knowles achieved the most solo success of the three with with her multi-platinum album, "Dangerously in Love," sparking rumors that the band would not get back together. Destiny's Child's latest album, "Destiny Fulfilled," has sold more than 2 million copies.

End Note

Katie Holmes , 26, has taken a break from proclaiming her love for Tom Cruise , 42, to announce she is converting to Scientology, Cruise's religion. The camera-friendly actor couple has been dating for two months. Cruise is an outspoken member of the religion but tells Entertainment Weekly he did not pressure his girlfriend to join.
