Washington Nationals outfielder Jose Guillen went to Walter Reed Army Medical Center Monday afternoon to visit soldiers wounded in Iraq, some of whom he invited to last night's game. He was so moved by the visit that he donated $10,000 to the Walter Reed Foundation.
"We had nothing to do with it," foundation representative Tom Fitzpatrick said. "He just came up to me while he was visiting the soldiers in the hospital and said he wanted to donate the money."
Guillen said yesterday that, should he make the all-star team, he would consider donating his entire bonus -- $50,000 if elected by voters, $25,000 if selected by coaches -- to the foundation.
"There's a lot of soldiers who are really wounded over there, and not a lot of people who know how they live," Guillen said.
Day Feeling Better
Right-hander Zach Day, on the disabled list with a fractured right radius, threw 45 pitches in a simulated game yesterday afternoon, and said he felt good. Saturday, he is scheduled to start a rehabilitation assignment at Class AA Harrisburg, where he'll likely make three starts. . . .
The Nationals juggled their rotation for the remainder of the series, giving ace Livan Hernandez an extra day off. Hernandez (11-2) originally was scheduled to pitch the final game of the Pittsburgh series, but will be replaced by Esteban Loaiza.
