Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer dismissed redshirt senior D.J. Walton from the team yesterday after Walton was arrested for armed robbery.
Walton, a 22-year-old defensive back who was an All-Met at Hylton High in Woodbridge, was arrested late Saturday and charged with four counts of robbery, four counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, four counts of abduction and one count of possessing marijuana, Prince William County police said.
Walton played on special teams in 2002 before he was convicted for driving under the influence and dismissed from the team. Beamer allowed him to return last season, when he played in two games, making eight tackles.
· TENNIS: French Open champions Rafael Nadal , Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero moved into the second round of the Swedish Open in Bastad, putting eight Spanish players in the final 16.
Top-seeded Nadal defeated doubles partner Juan Monaco , 6-1, 6-1.
Fifth-seeded Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, outlasted qualifier Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-1; fourth-seeded Moya, who won the French Open in 1998 and the Swedish Open in 2002, beat countryman Alex Calatrava , 7-5, 6-2; and two-time defending champion Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina dropped the first set to Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands, but came back to win, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
· HORSE RACING: Two jockeys were in critical condition after spills at separate Texas tracks during the weekend.
Casey Lambert broke his jaw and multiple ribs, and suffered a punctured lung in a three-horse fall at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie during Monday's final race. Lambert, 39, was in critical condition at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. His horse, Eunever , was taken from the track in a horse ambulance. The other two horses suffered no apparent injuries.
Akili Gray was in critical condition at University Hospital in San Antonio with head injuries after he was thrown during a Saturday race at Fredericksburg's Gillespie County Fairgrounds.
