· MACCABIAH GAMES: A competitive contingent of Jewish-American athletes celebrated the Fourth of July in Tel Aviv this year with dancing and traditional klezmer music, preparing for next week's opening of the Maccabiah, known as the Jewish Olympics.

In the past, organizers had trouble filling the slots on the team, but this year there was competition for many of the 775 slots -- probably because of a drop in Israeli-Palestinian violence.

The conflict was at its height in 2001, the last time a Maccabiah was held, but violence has dropped considerably since the two sides declared a truce in February.

The 12-day games will open Monday in Ramat Gan, next to Tel Aviv. Maccabiah officials expect the participation of more than 5,000 athletes from Israel and around the world in 36 sports.

· SOCCER: The Washington Freedom reserve team will begin its second home exhibition schedule tonight, facing the Maryland Pride at 7 at Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown. The reserve team includes nine former members of the Freedom team that won the 2003 WUSA title, as well as four other WUSA veterans. Tickets are $10.
