Storms Cut Power to Thousands

Thunderstorms that continued to pop up across the Washington region last night left about 6,300 homes without electricity shortly before midnight.

Utility company Web sites reported that about 1,700 homes were without electricity in Northern Virginia. Pepco reported about 2,400 outages, with some 1,400 of them in Prince George's County. Baltimore Gas and Electric listed about 600 additional outages in Prince George's and about 1,600 in Anne Arundel County.

Mayor Brings Meetings to Close

The board of directors of the National League of Cities wrapped up four days of meetings yesterday with a picnic hosted by D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) in the Lincoln Cottage at the President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home National Monument in Northwest.

Williams, the organization's president, used the opportunity to take elected officials from across the country on bus tours of the Anacostia River, neighborhoods in Southeast and development along U Street NW.

Over the past several days, the board discussed the Supreme Court's eminent domain ruling, rising health costs, congressional appropriations and the impact of tax reform on municipalities.

MARYLAND

Man Slain in Robbery Attempt

A 26-year-old Mount Rainier man was fatally shot early yesterday in Chillum, police said. Two assailants had demanded money from the victim, Esteban Sierra Pena, and his 22-year-old friend about 4 a.m. in the 2100 block of Guilford Road, police said. Pena and his friend attempted to flee, and Pena was shot, police said. His friend was not injured.

Man Found Dead in Pr. George's

A 22-year-old Edmonston man was found dead early yesterday in a small wooded area in the 5100 block of 54th Avenue, Prince George's County police said.

The body of Willie S. Bennett Jr., of the 4800 block of 51st Avenue, was discovered about 2:45 a.m. with a gunshot wound in his upper body, a police statement said.

Trainee Dies After Police 5K Run

A Maryland Transportation Authority Police trainee died yesterday after taking part in a 5K run held in memory of a transportation authority officer who died last year.
