A White House Sandal
There are two things we should be used to in political Washington: flip-flops and flaps. Now we have a flip-flop flap.
Northwestern University's national championship women's lacrosse team visited the White House last week, a day filled with pride and photo ops with the prez.
And in the women's prized photo with President Bush , you can see four women in their dresses and skirts -- and flip-flops. Thus the flap. After all, Bush has banned jeans at the White House as disrespectful.
The headline on a front-page story in the Chicago Tribune screamed "YOU WORE FLIP-FLOPS TO THE WHITE HOUSE?!," inspired by an e-mail sent to player Kate Darmody from her older brother after he saw the photo. Other family members were upset, too. "It mortified me," huffed the mother of player Aly Josephs .
"Nobody was wearing old beach flip-flops," protested Josephs, of Reisterstown, Md., who wore a pair with rhinestones.
Explained Darmody: "I tried to think of something that would go well with my outfit and at the same time not be that uncomfortable, but at the same time not disrespect the White House."
On NBC's "Today" show yesterday, Darmody and teammate Shelby Chlopak said they would auction off the flip-flops, with the proceeds going to a fund for a 10-year-old girl with a brain tumor.
Jude Law's Nanny Affair
Jude Law publicly apologized yesterday to his fiancee, actress Sienna Miller , for having a month-long affair with his child's nanny.
"I just want to say that I am deeply ashamed and upset that I've hurt Sienna and the people most close to us. I want to publicly apologize to Sienna and our respective families for the pain that I have caused," the 32-year-old actor said in a statement.
BBC News reports that the affair occurred with 26-year-old Daisy Wright , hired to care for one of Law's children as he filmed "All the King's Men" earlier this year.
Law has three children with his ex-wife, designer-actress Sadie Frost .
The British Press Association reported that when Miller arrived at Wyndham's Theatre in London yesterday, where she is performing, she did not appear to be wearing her engagement ring.
