DeLisha Milton-Jones scored 15 points against her former team, leading the Washington Mystics to a 74-68 victory over the Sparks yesterday in Los Angeles.
Chasity Melvin and Alana Beard added 14 points apiece, and Melvin grabbed nine rebounds for the Mystics (10-10), who won in Los Angeles for the first time in the franchise's eight-year history.
"We didn't know that," said Milton-Jones, who was traded to Washington for Chamique Holdsclaw in March. "It just makes the visit that much sweeter when you can come into hostile territory knowing that you were just traded and get a win."
Holdsclaw, averaging a league-leading 19.3 points, scored 17 for the Sparks (10-9), who have lost three of their last four. Doneeka Hodges added a career-high 16 points and tied a career best with five assists.
Holdsclaw added six rebounds and five assists as she returned to the lineup after missing one game because of a pulled left hamstring.
The Sparks used a 10-0 surge to take a 57-54 lead with 10 minutes 29 seconds to play. Then, with the score tied at 63, the Mystics made their move. Melvin made a layup and Charlotte Smith-Taylor hit a three-pointer to give the Mystics a 68-63 lead with 3:28 left.
Those points came while Sparks center Lisa Leslie was on the bench after injuring a knee with 4:55 remaining. She returned with 1:32 left.
"We got a break because Leslie went out," Mystics Coach Richie Adubato said. "The time that she was out, we went to Chas [Melvin] and she was able to take the ball to the hole twice, get fouled and score."
The Sparks narrowed the deficit to 70-66, but Beard made a jumper to extend the Mystics' advantage to 72-66 with 1:07 remaining.
Los Angeles failed to make a field goal in the final 4:36, scoring just six points on free throws.
ยท STORM 87, LIBERTY 78: In Seattle, Iziane Castro Marques scored a career-high 20 points and Betty Lennox added 18, leading the Storm over New York.
