Ohio State athletic department officials spent six weeks probing Smith's attendance at the June football camp in Nashville.
· HOCKEY: The Detroit Red Wings placed defenseman Derian Hatcher and forwards Darren McCarty and Ray Whitney on waivers, effectively cutting ties with the three high-profile veterans.
· AUTO RACING: A group hoping to take control of Formula One called for a meeting with the sport's governing body, and talks with FIA President Max Mosley over new rules could come before Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.
· OBITUARY: Ray Oldham , a 10-year NFL cornerback who won a Super Bowl ring with the 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers, has died. He was 54. Oldham died Saturday in Tennessee while training for a bicycle ride.
