Police Volunteer, 84, Fatally Hit by SUV

An 84-year-old police volunteer died yesterday from injuries she suffered when she was struck by an SUV backing out of a driveway.

The pedestrian, Toby Ehrlich Hayden of the 2600 block of Randolph Road in Wheaton, died yesterday afternoon, police said.

She had been a volunteer at the 4th District police station in Wheaton since 1991.

Hayden was headed to the station when she was hit.

Police said the driver, Emelitz Rivera, 39, apparently did not know that her 2001 Toyota Sequoia had hit someone as she backed out of her driveway in the 2400 block of Randolph Road, so she drove away.

A witness pulled alongside her vehicle to tell her that she had struck a pedestrian and needed to turn around.

She returned to the scene of the accident.

Police said the incident is under investigation.

No charges have been filed.

A Prince George's County fire official has been charged with making a false alarm, the fire department said last night.

Fire Maj. Cornelius K. Jackson has been placed on administrative leave pending the disposition of the charge, which involved a June 7 incident, a fire department statement said.

A fire department spokesman declined to give details about the alleged false alarm.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"We've never disagreed that he is probably a slow learner and he is not of high intelligence, but that is not the same as mentally retarded."

-- York County, Va., prosecutor Eileen Addison -- who twice convinced other juries that Daryl Renard Atkins, 27, deserved the death penalty -- after a jury ruled Atkins is not mentally retarded and therefore can be executed. -- A1
