Wrong Label for Laborers

Tuesday, August 16, 2005

I do not agree with the comment by County Supervisor Eugene A. Delgaudio (R-Sterling) that constructing a site for day laborers in Herndon is a "contradiction" in social policy [news story, Aug. 9].

Being tough on gang activity is not inconsistent with providing opportunities for the much-needed day-labor services in our area, if we consider people not by what we ascribe to them but by what they do.

People who commit acts of violence as part of a gang are criminals. People working in labor-intensive jobs for little pay to ensure the quality of life Northern Virginians expect shouldn't be forced to share that same label.
