The Washington Capitals signed recently acquired right wing Chris Clark to a one-year contract yesterday.

The Capitals obtained the rugged, 6-foot, 202-pounder from Calgary on Aug. 4 for a conditional 2006 draft pick. Clark accepted his qualifying offer, which will pay him about $590,000.

Clark scored 10 goals in each of the previous three seasons for the Flames. He also racked up 106 penalty minutes in 2003-04, and 126 the year before and could prove to be a valuable addition to the Capitals' checking line.

Meantime, restricted free agent defenseman Josef Boumedienne is exploring his options in Europe, according to Capitals General Manager George McPhee . Boumedienne did not sign his qualifying offer from the Capitals.
