Residents of Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Falls Church and Herndon are contributing to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort in various ways. Here are some that we know about. If you or your school, business, service club or place of worship is doing something to help the victims, send an e-mail with the details tofxextra@washpost.com.
Luncheon Benefit on Monday
Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly (D) will discuss the county's plan to provide support to Hurricane Katrina evacuees at a Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce luncheon Monday in Sterling.
Under the plan, the county government, schools, businesses and civic groups would combine their resources to offer long-term assistance to evacuees who are in Fairfax. The coalition, called Fairfax Families Care, has set an initial goal of finding 200 jobs and 100 housing units and accommodating 400 schoolchildren.
The $50-a-person luncheon at the Holiday Inn Washington Dulles is a fundraising event for hurricane relief efforts. Rudy Penner, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, will discuss Katrina's nationwide economic impact.
The hotel is at 1000 Sully Rd. (Route 28). Registration is from 11:30 a.m. to noon. To register online, visit http:/
Volunteers for Gulf Coast Duty
Members of the Fairfax Medical Reserve Corps, a group of medical and nonmedical volunteers managed by the county Health Department, are registering with the American Red Cross to help Hurricane Katrina victims in the Gulf Coast region, department officials said.
As of Tuesday, 11 volunteers had signed up. Two volunteers are scheduled to go to the Gulf Coast this week for a 14-day assignment, a Health Department spokeswoman said in a news release.
The Fairfax corps is a group of 3,300 people from medical and nonmedical backgrounds who have volunteered to assist the Health Department in a public health emergency. County officials say they need 13,000 volunteers to cover the county's population.
Students to Stage a Show
The student theater Critics and Awards Program, known as Cappies, is sponsoring a benefit show at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 featuring high school performers from throughout the Washington area.
The Katrina Aid performance will be at Hayfield Secondary School, 7630 Telegraph Rd. in the Alexandria section of Fairfax. The theater seats 1,400.
Proceeds will go to aid families displaced by Hurricane Katrina who are settling in the Washington area. The suggested donation is $50 for adults and $25 for students. For ticket information, call 703-924-4759.
As part of Cappies, Fairfax Extra publishes reviews of high school performances written by students under the guidance of faculty mentors. Soon to begin its seventh season, the program recognizes the achievements of young performers, writers, directors and stage crews. For information, visit www.cappies.com .
