Battlefield senior Stephen Spaulding worked at Dominion Valley Golf & Country Club over the summer. On Thursday, Spaulding put in some overtime at the Haymarket course, winning the Cedar Run District individual title in a sudden-death playoff to lead the second-year Bobcats to the team championship.
Battlefield, which also won the district's regular season title, posted a four-player total of 325, 21 shots better than Fauquier and Osbourn Park, which both finished at 346. Fauquier won runner-up honors in a playoff, securing the district's second Northwestern Region berth and denying the Yellow Jackets a fifth straight regional appearance.
In the individual competition, Spaulding and Osbourn Park junior Silas Van Sky both finished at 7-over par 79 after 18 holes. On the first playoff hole, the par-3 ninth, both players made par after Spaulding's second shot grazed the hole and lipped out.
Then, on the par-5 first hole, Spaulding's first shot bounced off a tree and landed in the rough, but he recovered to make a 15-foot birdie putt that proved to be the winner, a victory he attributed, in part, to his familiarity with the course. Dominion Valley is also home to Battlefield's practices and home meets.
"I work here, so I feel comfortable with most of the holes," Spaulding said.
Austin Bent (81), Pierce Bishop (82) and John Pretz (83) rounded out the scoring for Battlefield; all three would have advanced to regional play as individuals had the Bobcats not advanced as a team. The region tournament is Oct. 3 at Forest Greens Golf Club.
"I'm proud of them," Coach John Tillman said. "They knew what we had to do to win. The boys did well."
In the team competition, Fauquier senior Dan Sailer's 60-foot putt for birdie on the par-3 ninth hole sent the Falcons on to regionals. Osbourn Park had won the previous four Cedar Run District titles.
Culpeper (362) and Osbourn (400) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the team competition.
Stonewall Jackson did not field a team, although senior Greg Carter (88) advanced to the individual regional competition. The others to advance were Osbourn Park's Van Sky and Alan MacMullin (86); Osbourn's Kevin Kirk (86); and Culpeper's Michael Ellis (83) and Davis Gilmore (88).
