Two women were attacked in separate incidents Friday as each walked home from the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro station, and Fairfax County police said they believe the same man is responsible for both attacks and for a similar one in the area Sept. 21.

In the most recent incident, a woman was walking on a footpath near Livingstone Lane about 9:40 p.m. Friday when she was grabbed from behind and knocked to the ground. She screamed, and her attacker ran away toward the Metro station, which is in the 2700 block of Gallows Road, police said.

Just before 11 a.m., a woman left the station's parking lot, crossed Gallows Road and was taking a shortcut to her home when she was grabbed from behind. Her assailant dragged her off the footpath, assaulted her and fled, police said.

The attack last month also occurred on a shortcut from the station, one that police said is near Stenwood Elementary School. Police said the assailant in that attack might have been wearing a white T-shirt with a logo on the front with the words "Divers Club" and "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico."

Police said victims described the attacker as black, in his twenties, 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a thin build and short hair.
