Each candidate for governor of Virginia has a long record of public service. The Post is focusing today on the record of H. Russell Potts Jr., who is running as an independent. Articles about the records of Democrat Timothy M. Kaine and Republican Jerry W. Kilgore will also appear.
Public Office: Serving his fourth term as state senator, representing the 27th District, in Winchester, as a Republican; chairman of Senate Education and Health Committee.
Signature Issue: Public education -- sponsor of bills to pay teachers at the national average salary; pushed for the 2004 state budget deal that raised taxes by $1.5 billion over two years to support spending on schools, public safety and health care.
Personal: Born in Richmond; 66 years old; married with three daughters.
