The candidates for Virginia governor have long records of public service. The Post is focusing today on Republican Jerry W. Kilgore. An article about state Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. (R-Winchester), the independent candidate, was published Oct. 14, and one about Democrat Timothy M. Kaine, the lieutenant governor, also will appear.

Public Office: Former state and federal prosecutor; former secretary of public safety under Gov. George Allen (R); elected attorney general in 2001 and resigned this February to campaign.

Signature Issues: Helped abolish parole during the Allen administration; has worked for tougher laws against domestic violence and gangs; favors expanded use of the death penalty.

Personal: 44, born in Gate City, Scott County; lives in Glen Allen, near Richmond; married, with two children .

Education: BA, business and public administration, University of Virginia's College at Wise; JD, Marshall Wythe School of Law, College of William and Mary.

Private Employment: Partner, Williams Mullen law firm in Richmond.
