Public Office: Lieutenant governor of Virginia, 2002-present; mayor of Richmond, 1998-2001; Richmond City Council member, 1994-98.

Signature Issues: In Richmond government, worked on improving school system, reducing crime and cutting taxes; as lieutenant governor, supported proposals by Gov. Mark R. Warner (D) to raise some taxes to support more spending on schools and other public services.

Personal: 47, lives in Richmond; married, three children.
