In early 2002 the Bush administration tried to flesh out reports that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, purchased in Niger.

Feb. 19: Valerie Plame introduced her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson IV, at a CIA meeting about reports that Iraq tried to buy "yellowcake" uranium from Niger for nuclear weapons.

February: The CIA sent Wilson to Niger to investigate the reports. He concluded the reports were dubious.

March: Wilson briefed the CIA on his findings. The agency sent the White House a memo on his report.

Jan. 28: Bush included these 16 words in his State of the Union address: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."
