Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore has proposed widening Interstate 66, but the debate has been going on for years.

The Issue: Should the highway be widened from four to six lanes inside the Capital Beltway so that commuters could travel more quickly between Washington and the Northern Virginia suburbs?

Supporters Say: The highway clogs for miles in both directions during weekday rushes and throughout weekends. Also, more lanes would be needed to evacuate the District, if that became necessary.

Opponents Say: More lanes would just add more cars, generating more backups and creating more noise and air pollution in neighborhoods. Widening the highway would do little to solve traffic problems because a bottleneck would remain where the road enters a tunnel in Rosslyn.
