Wizards Make Roster Moves
Thursday, November 3, 2005
TORONTO, Nov. 2 -- The Wizards deactivated second-year center Peter John Ramos, rookie forward Andray Blatche and forward Awvee Storey for Wednesday's game against the Raptors. Rookie guard Donell Taylor was active. The Wizards are considering which players they may send down to their NBA Development League affiliate in Roanoke. The D-League schedule tips off Nov. 18.
The new collective bargaining agreement allows NBA teams to assign as many as two first- or second-year players to a D-League affiliate at one time, with no limit established on how long a player can remain with the affiliate.
Blatche recently practiced at full speed for the first time since he was shot on Sept. 25. Storey, Taylor and Ramos are all D-League candidates, but Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld said the team will wait to learn more about how the league will be structured before making a decision.
"The whole thing is kind of a work in progress," Grunfeld said. "You have to figure out whether a player is better off down there playing or better off practicing and traveling with us. There are still some kinks to be worked out with the system."
For what it's worth, all three inactives were sharply dressed, per NBA policy.
What's in an Opener?
Several Wizards said the team's thrilling 103-91 come-from-behind victory at Memphis in last year's season opener served as a springboard for the rest of the season.
But according to new Wizards guard Antonio Daniels, openers only mean so much. Daniels and the Seattle SuperSonics suffered a 114-84 whipping at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers in the season opener last year but still went on to win 52 games and advance to the second round of the playoffs.
"You had to bring that up, didn't you?" Daniels said. "Bad memories. But you know what? We won our next nine in a row. You want to come out and win the opener, but if you lose, it doesn't mean that your season is over."
