Barbara E. White's father discovered her body Nov. 30, 1993. Court records said her 13-month-old daughter was in the apartment while three men stabbed White 83 times in the bathroom of her apartment on Fairchild Drive in the Mount Vernon area.

In June, federal prosecutors obtained indictments of Lonnie T. Barnett Jr. and Arlington Johnson Jr., charging them with killing White while engaged in drug trafficking. Barnett pleaded guilty to the charge yesterday before U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III. Court records said Barnett sold crack for a dealer named Thomas Hager and that Barnett, Hager and Johnson drove to Fairfax and killed White as part of a feud with another drug-dealing crew. Hager is not charged in the case.

Glenarden Man Sentenced in Wife's Death

A Prince George's County judge yesterday sentenced a Glenarden man who stabbed his wife to death in front of four witnesses to life in prison plus 12 years.

Circuit Court Judge C. Philip Nichols Jr. sentenced Robert Lee Humphries III, 35, for the Feb. 17 murder of his wife, Linda Humphries, 38.

Humphries opted for a bench trial. On Aug. 25, Nichols convicted him of first-degree murder, two counts of burglary and one count of carrying a deadly weapon.

According to Prince George's prosecutors, Humphries deceived a maintenance worker at the building where his wife lived by reporting a false leak. When the maintenance worker went to her door, Humphries burst into the unit and attacked his wife, prosecutors said. A security officer and two other apartment employees tried to help, but Humphries fatally stabbed his wife, prosecutors said.

Carpenters Union Endorses O'Malley

Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley picked up the first endorsement by a statewide labor union in the 2006 governor's race, winning the backing yesterday of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters.

The carpenters announced their support for O'Malley at an afternoon rally that drew about 200 people in Forestville. Union leaders say about 5,000 of their 8,000 members from Maryland are based in the Washington suburbs.

The campaign of Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan, O'Malley's rival for the Democratic nomination, declined to comment. Both candidates have announced backing from chapters of labor unions based in their home regions.
