Deer Ventures Briefly Into Cheetah Yard
A deer got into the cheetah yard at the National Zoo yesterday and was pounced on by a mother cheetah before the deer escaped into Rock Creek Park, according to a witness and a zoo spokeswoman.
The young buck appeared in the largest cheetah yard shortly after 7 a.m. It bolted from a pond there and was chased by the mother cheetah and her four cubs, according to a witness. The mother cheetah jumped on the buck, and it ran back to the pond.
Peper Long, a zoo spokeswoman, said a keeper lured the cheetahs into their indoor enclosure, which allowed the buck to run into the woods. Long said that a female deer previously had gotten into the yard but that this was the first time a buck had intruded. The cheetahs were unhurt, she said; the buck had a gash near its tail.

MARYLAND
Maryland Men Save Fisherman in Fla.
Two Maryland boaters rescued a Florida man whose boat capsized in rough seas about eight miles off Boca Raton, Fla.
Rogers Washington, 49, said he treaded water for six hours Tuesday. During that time, he watched his friend succumb to an apparent heart attack, he was approached by a shark, and two other boaters waved at him but refused to pick him up, apparently thinking he was an illegal immigrant from Haiti.
When David Pensky, 61, of Annapolis approached Washington after spotting him frantically waving his arms in seven-foot seas, Washington shouted: "I'm an American! I'm an American!" -- afraid he would be left behind a third time.
Moments later, Pensky and Richard Holden, 63, of St. Mary's County, rescued the waterlogged fisherman, orange whistle to his lips, floating with the aid of a cooler lid and a small life vest shoved under his arm.
"They are the best men in the world," the fisherman told The Capital newspaper, in Annapolis. "They are God's children."
