Brad and Angelina's Night Out

Uh-huh. Sure you're not a couple. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" co-stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were spotted sitting close together while having dinner at Washington's Hay-Adams hotel Thursday night.

Our sources say the Oscar-winning actress entered the hotel's swanky Off the Record bar with her 4-year-old son, Maddox, in tow at 6 p.m. to join an unidentified man already at the restaurant. Ten minutes later, Pitt joined the group.

The report: Brace yourself, but Pitt, who's 41, looks smaller and less handsome in real life. She knocked the gawkers out. "Striking," they said. Maddox was adorable and very well behaved, perhaps because his baby sister, Zahara , was nowhere in sight.

Fresh from her appearances as Mother Earth on the Hill, the 30-year-old actress wore a dark, fitted business suit with matching heels. Pitt, sporting shaggy dark hair and a goatee, was also decked out in a suit with a light sweater.

They looked Very Washington for their Hollywood-on-the-Potomac outings: Jolie spent Thursday and yesterday buttonholing congressfolk to fund programs for AIDS orphans. (She recently adopted Zahara from Ethiopia.)

Pitt sent his two days on poverty, AIDS and debt relief, meeting with Sen. Tom Harkin and members of his staff Thursday. The senator "had a nice meeting with Brad and found him very gracious," said a spokeswoman for the Iowa Democrat.

Isn't it nice when a couple of do-gooders can find time together in our nation's capital?

Was Romance on the Menu?

Republican convention a deux ? Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.) and Rep. Mary Bono (R-Calif.) were seen dining together at the Hard Times Cafe in Alexandria on Thursday night. And it didn't look like a business meeting.

Our sources say that although both were dressed in work clothes, there were no papers or notes on their cozy table for two, and the duo left hand in hand. Bono, 43, and Mack, 38, are getting divorces; their representatives have not acknowledged a romance between them.

But one spotter, who did not want to be named, was impressed with Mack's "warm, kind of adoring smile." Other necks craned as well, so next time, guys, try eating at home.
