13. HAZEL RIVER INN AND PUB Upstairs, a spacious restaurant with a Austrian/contemporary American menu (entrees $16 to $27). The pub, downstairs in a former prison, has sandwiches, burgers and more than 20 imported beers.

14. HERBAL CONNECTION A specialty shop that sells more than 200 kinds of bulk, medicinal and culinary herbs and spices as well as vitamins and herbal tinctures.

15. IT'S ABOUT THYME A casual restaurant for country/European cuisine with strong ties to Italy (entrees $11.95 to $22). A favorite is the four-herb roasted chicken.

16. KNAKAL'S BAKERY An old-fashioned, small-town bakery that sells the perfect biscuit for country ham ($1.60 per dozen). Don't overlook the tall, three-layer coconut cakes ($6.99 each) and oversized chocolate eclairs ($1.39 each).

RATHUIL' ALL THINGS IRISH Four flavors of fresh scones are baked daily, made with imported Irish cream flour and local buttermilk ($1.75 each), as well as fresh whiskey cakes, Christmas cakes and traditional puddings. Shelves are stocked with an extensive collection of brown and soda bread mixes, jams, mustards and marinades from the Old Country. Also: Irish sweaters, jewelry and gifts.

18. RINCON HISPANO A small Latino grocery with a good bakery selection on weekends. Fresh, hot tamales ($1 each) are available every day.

19. TEA, LACE AND ROSES This Victorian-style tearoom and gift shop has a full menu of soups and sandwiches as well as 25 kinds of tea. A pot of tea and a scone go for $3.75; a Royal tea with champagne, caviar, assorted hors d'oeuvres and beef Wellington is $25 per person.
