GETTING THERE: Numerous airlines fly from all three D.C. area airports to Cancun. Round-trip flights during the height of the Christmas season start at about $510, although if you're willing to fly Christmas day, Delta is offering fares of just over $400. Immediately after Christmas week, fares drop drastically. Testing sample dates in January, I found United flights as low as $300, with similar fares in February on US Airways, American, Spirit and Continental.
GETTING AROUND: Major hotels and tour groups offer airport and hotel transfers, but if you wish more independence, don't hesitate to rent a car. Rates begin at about $35 a day. The hotel zone in Cancun is easy to find; it runs along one boulevard with kilometer markers. One well-maintained road runs down the coast, and it would be hard to get lost.
WHERE TO STAY: Beachfront hotels in Cancun generally start at about $160 per night double, with some properties going for $500 or more per night. Orbitz is advertising sales for several properties during high season. For example, a double at the all-inclusive Rui Caribe (Boulevard Kukulcan, Kilometer 5.5, 888-666-8816) is available at various times for $200 a night, down from the usual $333.
Beachfront properties in Cozumel are generally a bit cheaper, starting at about $130 per night.
Double rooms in the Mayan Riviera typically range from $150 to $450 per night in high season. You may find lower rates in small beachfront hotels in Playa del Carmen, the so-called capital of the Mayan Riviera, and in the small, quiet properties of the hotel zone in Tulum.
