Here is what "Yardsticks," educator Chip Wood's book summarizing the views of developmental psychologists and educators, says about the 14-year-olds who inhabit ninth grade:

They enjoy research and putting together research reports.

Many have an increased interest in math and science.

Current events is a popular subject and often discussed either formally or informally.

They complain about the volume of homework but often secretly enjoy challenge and their ability to meet teacher demands.

They often say the work is too easy when they find it plenty challenging.

When they complain about work as "boring," that translates as, "I don't really understand this stuff."

In some school settings, they give in to peer pressure not to do well in school.

They function well in small (eight- to 10-person) discussion groups.

They like to improve work if given the chance to revise.

They need as much physical release as possible -- brief periods outdoors or stretch breaks in the classroom.

They find it difficult to maintain good posture and sit properly in typical school furniture.

A rest period, quiet reading or a nap often improves performance and behavior in the afternoon.
