NELSON R. SANTIAGO JR., 27
JOB: Admissions recruitment officer at Howard University.
SALARY: $30,000 to $40,000
EDUCATION: Bachelor's in English
WHAT HE DOES: An answer-man for all things Howard, Santiago splits his time between talking on campus with prospective students and pitching the university to the nation, fielding questions at national college fairs, community colleges, high schools and even elementary schools.
WOULD YOU WANT HIS JOB? Santiago usually hits three states a month and stays for at least two days (though his longest stint on the road was two weeks). Talking with prospective students and their parents requires keeping up with the latest issues in the field (like the revised SAT due in 2005), and changes to academic programs, technology and financial aid opportunities at the school. "You have to walk in there and assume that they know nothing about Howard."
HOW YOU CAN GET HIS JOB: Start with your alma mater: Santiago went to Howard, worked in the admissions office as an undergrad and was a campus tour guide.
