"Wedding Crashers" (Includes Unrated and R-rated versions; List price: $29.98)
Release Date: Jan. 3
"Wedding Crashers" received a warm reception when it debuted in theaters last summer. Critics liked it (The Post's Stephen Hunter called it "lung-bloatingly funny"), and audiences clearly loved it. The amusing marriage of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn turned into one of the top-grossing movies of 2005, a rare cinematic success in a generally dismal year at the box office.
Unfortunately, the "Uncorked" edition of the "Crashers" DVD -- which includes an extended version of the comedy as well as the original R-rated theatrical release -- goes down a lot like a piece of wedding cake. It's basically satisfying, but you kind of wish it had better icing.
The DVD comes with its share of the usual bonus features, including four deleted scenes with commentary, two featurettes and a pair of audio tracks, one of which was recorded by Vaughn and Wilson. The unrated edition also includes eight more minutes of movie, although the extended and reinserted scenes do little -- for better or worse -- to alter the picture.
The extras boast some high points, such as the "Event Planning" featurette, which reveals that an actual wedding planner and "magic and balloon consultant" both worked on the set. But after watching the wealth of laugh-out-loud material on the recently released DVD of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" -- last summer's other hit comedy, and one often compared with "Wedding Crashers" -- I wish the producers of this DVD had added a few more items to its registry.
Think of This Bonus Point and Let It Go: Karaoke fans may appreciate the fourth deleted scene, in which Vaughn and Wilson lead a truly terrible round of Nena's "99 Red Balloons."
Absent Bonus Points: During their occasionally entertaining commentary track, Wilson and Vaughn suggest that several scenes in the movie were born out of improvisation. So how come there are no outtakes or a gag reel? Perhaps those will come with the inevitable "Wedding Crashers: The Honeymoon Edition."
Also New on DVD This Week: "Broken Flowers."
