Maryland is one of two states in the nation that limit the number of funeral homes that can have corporate ownership. (New Hampshire is the other.)

Under Maryland law, there are only two ways to own a mortuary: Be a licensed mortician (or the spouse of a deceased mortician), or own one of 59 licenses that have been in circulation since World War II.

Hagerstown cemetery owner Charles S. Brown has tried for 10 years to get that cap lifted but has been blocked in the legislature by funeral industry lobbying and the determined opposition of a delegate from Baltimore.
