Breezeatl is expected to face Bethel star Francena McCorory for the first time this year at the Montgomery Invitational on Saturday. McCorory is widely considered the favorite in the 55, 300 and 500 at the Virginia AAA state meet.
Indians Win Tournament
Behind four individual champions, the No. 5 Gar-Field wrestling team won the 16-team Prince William County Invitational on Dec. 29-30.
Joe Grohoski (103), Reece Baggot (112), Zumarr Archer (171) and George Calvert (215) won titles as the Indians (205 points) bested First Colonial (184.5) to win the tournament for the second season in a row.
Forest Park and Brentsville tied for third with 170 points. Kyle Terrill (119), Tariq Johnson (160) and Robert West (189) won titles for 10th-ranked Forest Park; Cody Phipps (152) was Brentsville's lone champion.
With seven state qualifiers returning from last season, Gar-Field (5-3) is shaping up as one of the area's better tournament teams. The Indians, third-place finishers at last year's Virginia AAA meet, finished third and were the top Virginia team at the Richmond Invitational last month.
Commitments
Hylton senior wide receiver-defensive back Marshall Dill has unofficially committed to play football for Division I-AA William & Mary, according to his father, Peter. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Dill, a two-time All-Extra selection, had 34 catches for 750 yards and 11 touchdowns last season for the Northwestern Region champion Bulldogs. . . .
Osbourn Park senior Kat Beauvais, an All-Extra infielder, has signed a letter-of-intent to play softball for Division II Francis Marion (S.C.) University.
