On the face of it, everything points to the Redskins in their rematch with Seattle in their next playoff game. They lead the all-time series against the Seahawks 8-4 and are 4-1 in Seattle. Overall, they've outscored the Seahawks 231-171.
Then there was the last time they played, when the Redskins left FedEx Field on Oct. 2 with a 20-17 overtime victory over the team that finished with the best record (13-3) in the NFC.
After trailing 3-0, the Redskins went ahead with 2 minutes 39 seconds left in the first half on a one-yard touchdown pass from Mark Brunell to Robert Royal. They led throughout the second half until Matt Hasselbeck hit Darrell Jackson on a six-yard touchdown pass that tied it at 17 with 1:23 left in regulation.
On the next possession, a Brunell pass intended for Clinton Portis was intercepted by Kelly Herndon at the Washington 35. He returned it two yards, giving Seattle the ball with 49 seconds left.
Three plays later, Josh Brown's 47-yard field goal with one second left hit the left upright, sending the game into overtime.
Washington won the coin toss and elected to receive in overtime. The Redskins drove 55 yards on 11 plays, winning on Nick Novak's 39-yard field goal with 9:29 left.
For the next eight weeks, though, the victory over Seattle meant little. After starting 3-0, the Redskins dropped to 5-6 before finishing the regular season with five straight wins.
This time, the teams will face each other at Qwest Field, where the Seahawks are undefeated this season. But in their only appearance there, in the stadium's first season in 2002, the Redskins won, 14-3.
