As technology improves, eligibility criteria for cochlear implants are changing. Current Medicare guidelines -- often consulted and adopted by insurers -- stipulate:
For Adults
Severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears
Functional hearing nerve
Intact cochlea
Minimal or no benefit from hearing aids
Healthy enough to undergo surgery
