The attorney for Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor informed South Florida prosecutors yesterday that he intends to file a motion for a continuance to postpone Taylor's Jan. 17 trial date on felony assault charges. Miami-Dade prosecutor Mike Grieco said he met with Taylor's lawyer, Ed Carhart, yesterday for final depositions and was informed of the upcoming motion.
Carhart was not immediately available to comment, but Grieco said he expects the motion could go before a judge by Friday, and said he will not pose objections to another continuance.
Taylor, 22, was arrested in June on charges of assault with a firearm for allegedly brandishing a gun at individuals he believed stole two all-terrain vehicles from him. The trial was moved back twice during the regular season and, with the Redskins facing Seattle on Saturday in the divisional playoffs and perhaps traveling the following weekend for the NFC championship game, it is possible Taylor would have to miss practice and meetings to attend the Jan. 17 trial.
Should that date stand -- and the judge decline a further continuance -- Taylor's attendance in court that day in Miami would be mandatory.
Grieco said that he while he would hope the continuance is not filed now solely because of potential conflicts with the NFL playoffs, he is not averse to a later court date. "I'm not going to object to a continuance," Grieco said. "His fate and business affects more than him, and I'm aware of that."
Grieco said that Carhart informed him of a separate case he has going to trial a week after Taylor is scheduled to appear in court, and that could be a factor in a postponement as well.
Taylor, the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft, is a Florida native and skipped the team's offseason conditioning program at Redskins Park to remain in the Miami area instead.
Taylor had a tumultuous rookie season -- including several fines for on-field and off-field infractions and a one-game suspension by the team for a DUI arrest, of which he was later acquitted.
Last Saturday, he was ejected from Washington's playoff win at Tampa Bay for spitting on running back Michael Pittman -- Taylor denies doing so -- and was fined $17,000 by the NFL on Monday.
