A broken nose forced Madison junior guard Robert Schenck behind a clunky mask at the beginning of the season. Last week, Schenck discarded it, and while the increased court vision improved his play, the best thing about his newfound sight might have been the ability to watch teammate Warren Edney.
Edney, a 6-foot-4 senior forward, enjoyed one of the strongest weeks of his career, scoring a season-high 24 points in a win over Langley on Jan. 9 and 20 points in Madison's decisive 51-42 win over South Lakes last Thursday.
"Warren really led us," Schenck said. "He had a couple big dunks. He really had a big game."
Schenck was not the only one with a good view of Edney's heroics. University of North Carolina Coach Roy Williams was on hand for the South Lakes game to watch Seahawks star junior Julian Vaughn, but left with his ears ringing to chants from the Madison fans of, "Roy wants Edney!"
Madison Coach Chris Kuhblank has called Edney the MVP of the AAA Liberty District due to his steady, intense play. On Sunday, Edney, who is the only player to score in double figures every game for the district leading Warhawks (11-3, 5-1), forced an Oakton player to receive 17 stitches after an errant elbow.
"I like dunking, doing fancy moves in the air, staying in the air for a long time, smiling, clapping my hands, talking to the refs, making little jokes," Edney said. "I'm just having fun out there."
