A Fairfax County police officer conducting an investigation in the Fair Oaks area shot and killed a 37-year-old man last night while both were inside a sport-utility vehicle, police said.
Police released few details early today as the department's internal affairs and criminal investigators tried to sort out the events that led to the 9:35 p.m. shooting in the 11600 block of Cavalier Landing Court, an area of high-rise condominiums, police spokesman Richard Henry said.
The officer was part of the department's tactical unit, which "conducts high-risk" assignments. Henry said other officers were also in the area.
After the shooting, the man was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Henry declined to disclose what the officers were investigating or whether the man was armed.
