· To save money, stay on the castle grounds instead of within the castle and book Monday through Thursday or in late fall/winter (except Christmas holidays) and early spring. Some castles have year-round rates, some seasonal. When you book, ask if the price is per room or per person, and if breakfast and tax are included.

· Two-night minimums often are required in summer and on weekends. Ask about price breaks for multiple midweek nights or other promotions. That information may not be volunteered. Some places have last-minute sales online for up to 40 percent off.

· Reserve up to a year ahead for summer and Christmas.

· Keep a calculator handy to convert currencies.

· Some castles charge a deposit against your credit card and suggest you purchase travel insurance. Check the cancellation/refund policy: What happens if you're delayed?

· Family rooms often are in outbuildings, and some castles won't rent tower rooms to families. A handful have day nurseries. Ask if children are welcome.

· Many castles host weddings on weekends, and some hold conferences. Ask if groups will be staying or activities scheduled (such as Halloween ghost tours).

· Telephone if you have a health concern or disability. Not all places accommodate the disabled.

· Unless you have a car, ask about public transportation.
