Gwen Washington scored 26 points and fellow sophomore Takieya Rouse added 17 as Stonewall Jackson defeated Osbourn Park , 65-50, to clinch the Virginia AAA Cedar Run District regular season title, the first girls' basketball regular season title in school history, second-year coach Nsonji White said.

Washington and Rouse combined to score the first 21 points of the fourth quarter for Stonewall (17-2, 9-0) to help the Raiders pull away from the visiting Yellow Jackets (11-8, 6-2). In the 14 years before White took over, the Raiders had a record of 59-228.

"This all just keeps building our confidence," Rouse said. "Usually Stonewall gets looked at for bad reasons at basketball. Now, we're getting looked at because we're good."

With the victory, Stonewall clinched a berth in the AAA Northwestern Region tournament and a first-round home game. . . .

In an A Bull Run District matchup, first-place Clarke County needed every bit of two overtime periods to get past second-place George Mason , 62-61.

Pete Smetanick connected on a game-winning three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the second overtime for Clarke County, which improved to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in the district. Smetanick scored six points for the game.

George Mason (16-5, 7-2) had a last-second shot go in and out. George Mason's Jack Settje led all scorers with 27 points.

Beaten by the Past

The South County girls' 74-67 win at Hayfield was a game with no shortage of personal connections. Not only did the Stallions avenge an earlier 60-58 loss to the Hawks, but they got 32 points and 11 rebounds from junior guard Lauren Reinshuttle and 24 points from junior guard Brittany Carlock -- who both started last season for Hayfield. Further, Hayfield is still coached by Brittany's father, Richard Carlock. . . .

Junior forward John Flowers matched his season high with 30 points and blocked six shots as St. Mary's Ryken ended a six-game losing streak in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference with a 63-51 victory at Bishop Ireton .

Playing in front of Maryland assistant coach Rob Moxley, the 6-foot-7 Flowers scored many of his points over the Cardinals' two tall juniors -- 7-foot Mike Williams and 6-10 Shane Walker -- with a variety of turnaround jumpers and low-post dribble moves. . . .

The Long Reach boys' basketball team clinched a spot in the inaugural Howard County championship game on Feb. 21 with a dominating 73-49 victory over host Howard in Ellicott City.

The Lightning (17-2 overall, 14-1 league) will host the game by winning one of its final three games. River Hill , which entered last night with a 10-4 league mark, is in second place, with Howard, Atholton and Oakland Mills each having five league losses.

The Lightning extended its winning streak to 11 games largely because of its performance during the third quarter. Long Reach outscored Howard 27-2 to extend its nine-point lead at intermission to 59-25. Long Reach senior forwards Darryl Webb (23 points) and Daevon Wall (19 points) led an attack in which 11 of the team's 13 players scored.
