We were reminded today of a favorite line from a favorite movie, "Moonstruck."
La bella luna!
No, no, that's not it, although there has been a full moon hanging about, and we do love that scene. We hope to be that old guy someday, exhorting an assortment of motley dogs to howl at a giant moon. Except we hope to be an old woman, of course.
No, the line we're thinking of was uttered by that noted Italian actress Cher :
Snap out of it!
Simple. Crisp. To the point.
Perhaps she could smack around Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves, see if that works. They've already let a Frenchman push them around; why not an aging pop singer? Quelle difference ?
Perhaps a quick pop for Apolo Anton Ohno. Sure, he falls down; we've seen that before.
We've also seen Olympians oversleep for competitions. We've seen Olympians miss their buses for competitions (and with the transportation troubles at these Games, we are likely to see Olympians commandeering buses at these Games).
What we've never seen is an Olympian forget he was supposed to be racing.
He's in the building. He's already raced. He's seen others race. He sees that the fans haven't left. He sees that the other skaters haven't left. And still, he has to hop a wall. Granted, it's the B final, but the winner does get another crack at a medal. Hey, it's a crazy sport, but not so madcap that a guy forgets why he's in a giant building with an ice floor, pieces of metal strapped to his feet and more Lycra clothing than Madonna.
Snap out of it!
