All area school systems in the Washington region are either closed or opening late today. The U.S. government will open on time, with an unscheduled leave policy in place.

In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a special statement warning area motorists and pedestrians of possible icy conditions on roads and sidewalks as a result of sub-freezing temperatures during the night that froze the melt from yesterday.

Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing in most communities until after 9:30 this morning.

Some traffic lights are out at intersections because of continued power outages in the region.

Pepco reported that about 7,000 customers lacked power early this morning.

In Northern Virginia, Dominion Virginia Power reported about 7,200 outages.

Baltimore Gas and Electric reported 44,000 customers powerless, concentrated in Anne Arundel County.
