What it does: Manages ports in 13 countries, including China and Germany.

Recent acquisitions: Last week, it agreed to buy British firm Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which runs six major U.S. ports, for $6.8 billion. In early 2005, it purchased the overseas port operations of U.S. railroad company CSX Corp. for $1.15 billion.
