Miller Is Voted Sexy Male Skier
|
|
Bode Miller may be 0 for 4 in the medal count, but he shot to the top of at least one podium this week, taking honors among readers of Ski Racing and skiracing.com as having the most sex appeal among male Olympic skiers.
Presented with a list of candidates, voters gave the 28-year-old Miller the nod, with 44 percent of votes. Fre estyle moguls ace Jeremy Bloom, who finished sixth in his final Olympics before entering the NFL draft, was second with 21 percent of the votes. U.S. Alpine ace Daron Rahlves, who also failed to medal in his final Olympics, drew 12 percent of the vote. The remaining votes were split among Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal; American cross-country skier Andy Newell; and Finland's Kalle Palander.

Turning Back Time
It has become tradition for me every two years: Head to the Superstore before the Games begin, do all my tchatchke shopping and get myself the same souvenir: an Olympic Swatch.
I've worn both my Athens Swatches -- I couldn't pick just one -- almost daily, so I was looking forward to the opportunity to make a change.
The selection in Turin wasn't as great as that in Athens, and the watches I saw seemed to feature those horrible marshmallow-headed mascots, which I don't care to remember. But I saw one that I loved: The navy band featured tiny posters of past Olympics, and the colors of the Olympic rings were imprinted on the face in blocks. I grabbed it, paid and went on with my shopping.
About a week later I noticed what looked like a scratch on the crystal. I don't have the greatest vision close up, and I forgot my requisite magnifying glass this trip, so it took me awhile to realize that the crystal was engraved "Sydney 2000."
Yes, I bought a 6-year-old watch. Amy Shipley, who accompanied me as I plowed through the store like Sherman through Georgia, found this riotous. I guess I see her point.
Now I have to go back to the Superstore and try again.
