Virginia and Maryland lawmakers acted yesterday on proposed smoking bans.
· Virginia A House General Laws subcommittee voted 6 to 0 to reject the "Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act," which had passed the Senate 21 to 18. SB 648 would have banned smoking in public workplaces with the exception of certain tobacco stores and offices. The ban would have extended to bars, restaurants and bowling alleys.
· Maryland The House Health and Government Operations Committee failed to pass the "Clean Indoor Air Act of 2006" on a vote of 11 to 11. HB 375 needed 13 votes to clear the committee. The bill would have banned smoking in indoor public places, including bars and restaurants with liquor licenses. An amendment to the bill that was approved by the committee would have exempted certain tobacco stores, such as cigar shops.
